It was a pleasure to recently work with a good friend and talented musician, Andrew Taves, on his debut album entitled No Matter Where You Go, There You Are.

“Andrew has been influenced by Canadian artists such as Great Big Sea, Neil Young, The Tragically Hip and Gordon Lightfoot as well as Jack Johnson, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley and local musicians, Dale Butler and Jody Raffoul.
Having grown up on the back roads of Essex County, between Leamington and Wheatley, he says he plays music because he has to. Having picked up a guitar at age 12, he has yet to set it down.
Andrew enjoys writing songs that greatly reflect his road trips, love, life and travel experiences across Canada. His music is Folk Rock with acoustic guitar in most of his songs.” – www.andrewtaves.ca

Working with Taves we had a general goal in mind, to convey the laid back style of the music and portray the theme of the CD which centers around life and travel in Canada. We decided to use a loose illustration to achieve the folk/easy-going feel of the album. The struggle was finding a subject matter that worked with the illustration style and still conveyed the theme.

Initially I tried a mash-up of Canadian landscapes contrasted against the silhouette of Taves at the beginning of a journey. It ended up being too busy and didn’t work well with the style I was going for.

The solution was to simplify and focus on the core of the album, just the artist and his guitar; location being irrelevant without that. I decided a guitar case covered with travel stickers was the only visual needed combined with the loose style to achieve the goal. I did end up also doing an illustration of the artists 1964 pickup truck, his second passion, as a complimentary visual.
