Dr. Frederick Banting’s idea for insulin was sparked in London, Ontario, where the story continues 100 years later with the work of numerous researchers carrying on his legacy through collaborative research. They are paving the way for innovation in diabetes research, education and care.
To celebrate the 100 year anniversary, the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University, Lawson Health Research Institute, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Health Care came together to launch The story starts here: 100 years of diabetes research and care.

Even today, nearly 6,000 miles from his home, Shakespeare is never far from mind for those at Western University. From the Stratford stage, to nearly half of network television plots, to random quotations and quips on coffee mugs, T-shirts and newspaper headlines, The Bard has been all pervasive in lives for ages.
On April 23, 2016, we again took note as the world marked the 400th anniversary of the death of its most celebrated English language playwright. This year, the totality of his works have been revived on stages, screens and pages in special performances and editions commemorating his life and contributions. Of course, it is not like they ever left, mind you. Shakespeare’s work is continually playing somewhere for as long as anyone can remember.
Western News joined the celebration. We recruited this institution’s finest Shakespeare scholars to share their insights into The Bard – and play a little dress-up.
A special thanks to the authors (and actors) for their contributions, as well as to Jo Jennings and Helga Ruppe, from Western's Faculty of Arts & Humanities, who gave not only space, but placed in our hands a vast collection of costumes and props with which to play.
And now, we lift the curtain on Shakespeare 400.

Modern-day treasure hunter Keith Barron holds the title for the most insane stories shared during a photoshoot: trekking through the jungles of Ecuador, fighting off exotic bugs, finding the country's largest gold deposit, to the search for the Lost City of Gold. Portraits taken in and around Angkor Wat, Cambodia.
In 2011 I had the opportunity to spend a week in Cienfuegos Cuba, near the city of Trinidad. As nice as the all-inclusive resorts and pristine white sandy beaches were, my favorite parts were actually going into Trinidad and interacting with the locals. It was like stepping back in time, with 1950s cars and horse and buggy transportation, the laid back lifestyle and lack of commercialism. It was a complete cultural departure from the lifestyle of Canada.
The unique culture and colorfully rustic architecture provided tons of great photo opportunities. The locals were also very open to being photographed, often in exchange for a peso or two.
These are a few of my favorite shots from the trip.

“Programs created to specifically address the needs of the poor almost always end up becoming poor programs,” he explained. “What could be accomplished, if we understood that people are broke but not broken? Every day, I see people tapping into their resilience. It’s the stories we tell about poverty, and the approaches we take, that need fixing, not the people.”

A century ago, Einstein achieved his long-sought theory of gravitation, the General Theory of Relativity, by publically debuting it during presentations to the Prussian Academy in November 1915. A seminal text, this paper led to a scientific revolution that forever changed our understanding of the universe.
To celebrate the achievements of the 20th century’s greatest philosopher-scientist, the Rotman Institute of Philosophy launched Einstein @ Rotman 2015, a year-long program of activities for both scholars and the general public, centred around the successes and enduring mysteries of Einstein’s ideas. The inaugural lecture, Gravity, Geometry, Philosophy: 100 Years in Einstein’s Universe, was delivered by DiSalle in March.
The series set out for people to gain an appreciation of Einstein from many vantage points.

I had the honour of photographing Tibor ‘Max’ Eisen, a Holocaust survivor who has been working with Western University professor, Amanda Grzyb, on capturing his remarkable story. Hearing about his experience first-hand, and the memories that still keep him up, was powerfully moving.
------
Tibor ‘Max’ Eisen still wakes from his sleep with the smells of those cattle cars in his nose – the smells of a hundred people wedged in place for three days and three nights. And somewhere in those cars, among all those bodies, strangers and neighbours alike, all saturated in the same rotten stink, was his family. Somewhere, his mother stood with his still-breastfeeding little sister. Somewhere, his brothers, 8 and 10, were terrified among a forest of bodies far bigger than them.

Will Nediger is a puzzling guy.
Obsessed with solving crosswords at an early age, he created his first puzzle at 10. “I’m sure it was pretty terrible,” Nediger said, recalling the scores of graph paper ruined, as he erased away his penciling early on, honing his craft.
But practice paid off.
At 16, the New York Times – home of the world’s most famous crossword – accepted one of his puzzles. By 18, and in his second year at Western, six of his puzzles had made the cut. Pretty impressive, considering the paper receives 75-100 submissions each week.
